⚠️ Disclaimer
Before anything else:
I’m a student myself, and I personally don’t use this tool for doing homework automatically.
This guide exists because:
- Firefox Android extension support is genuinely interesting
- Groq’s API is cool tech
- people were already asking how the setup works
This article is provided for educational and informational purposes only.
Use tools like this responsibly:
- to check your work
- understand solutions
- unblock yourself when stuck
- learn how browser extensions and APIs work
—not to avoid learning maths entirely.
Browser extensions can access page data and website content, so only install extensions you trust and understand. Mozilla provides official Android extension support through its add-ons ecosystem.
Security researchers have also demonstrated how malicious browser extensions can abuse permissions and compromise privacy/security.

Installing Sparx Hax on Firefox Android (with Groq Setup)
If you’ve ever stared down a wall of Sparx Maths questions on your phone at 11pm, you already know the pain.
The good news: Firefox on Android supports proper browser extensions, and Sparx Hax plugs straight into a free Groq API key to do the heavy lifting.
This is the full setup — from a clean Firefox install to a working Sparx Hax button directly inside Sparx Maths.
📸 What You’ll End Up With
By the end of this guide you’ll have:
- Firefox extensions working on Android
- Sparx Hax installed
- A Groq API key connected
- AI-generated answers inside Sparx Maths
🧰 What You’ll Need
- An Android phone
- Firefox for Android
- A free Groq account
- About 5 minutes
- Mild academic suffering
📲 Step 1 — Install Firefox on Android
Download Firefox from the Play Store if you don’t already have it installed.
Firefox for Android supports extensions directly through Mozilla’s add-on ecosystem.
Once installed:
- Open Firefox
- Skip through the intro screens
- No account needed
💡 Firefox is one of the few major Android browsers with proper extension support.
🧩 Step 2 — Install the Sparx Hax Extension
Firefox Android now supports installing extensions directly from Mozilla Add-ons. Open Firefox and:
- Tap the ⋮ menu
- Tap Extensions
- Search for Sparx Hax
- Tap Add to Firefox
- Confirm permissions
If prompted:
- allow extension permissions
- allow private browsing access if you use private tabs
Mozilla expanded Android extension support significantly starting in late 2023.
🔑 Step 3 — Create a Free Groq API Key
Sparx Hax uses an AI model to read and solve questions.
Groq is currently the easiest free option:
- very fast
- generous free tier
- works well on mobile
Open:
Then:
- Sign in with Google or GitHub
- Open the sidebar
- Click API Keys
- Click Create API Key

Give the key a name like:
sparx-hax
Then copy the generated key.
Example:
gsk_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
⚠️ Groq only shows the key once — copy it immediately.
⚙️ Step 4 — Configure Sparx Hax
Back inside Firefox:
- Open ⋮ → Extensions
- Tap Sparx Hax
- Open Settings
Use these settings:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Provider | Groq |
| API Key | Your gsk_... key |
| Model | llama-3.3-70b-versatile |
Alternative faster model:
llama-3.1-8b-instant
Then hit Save.
If there’s a Test Connection button, press it.
You should see a green success message.
🧪 Step 5 — Use It on Sparx
Open:
Then:
- Log in normally
- Open a homework task
- Wait for the overlay button to appear
The extension should:
- read the question
- send it to Groq
- generate an answer
- return it directly inside the page
Usually this takes a few seconds.
🚀 Optional Tweaks
Enable Desktop Mode
Some Sparx pages behave better in desktop mode.
To enable it:
- Tap ⋮
- Tick Desktop site
Use a Faster Model
If Groq rate limits you:
llama-3.1-8b-instant
is much faster and lighter.
🩹 Troubleshooting
The button doesn’t appear
Try:
- refreshing the page
- reopening Firefox
- checking extension permissions
- confirming you’re on
sparxmaths.uk
Invalid API Key
Usually caused by:
- missing characters
- accidental spaces
- incomplete paste
Generate a fresh key in Groq and try again.
Rate Limited
Groq free tier has request limits.
Fixes:
- wait 30–60 seconds
- switch models
- avoid spam retries
Wrong answers on diagram questions
LLMs are weakest when:
- the question depends on images
- diagrams are unclear
- graph labels are tiny
Treat the extension as:
- a checker
- a helper
- a fallback when stuck
—not as a replacement for understanding the maths.
⚠️ A Final Note
Sparx exists so you actually learn the maths.
Use tools like this to:
- check your working
- save time on repetitive tasks
- unblock yourself when stuck
The goal isn’t just getting the green tick — it’s understanding why the answer works.
That said…
Happy hacking. 🦊
